A team of scientists and students from the Institute of Archaeology, University of Warsaw, under the supervision of Dr. Radosław Karasiewicz-Szczypiorski, will inaugurate Polish archaeological research in Georgia. The expedition will set off in mid-June to the city Batumi on the Black Sea coast.
"Previous contacts between the two countries have not resulted in joint excavations. Now, we are filling the gap"- said Dr. Karasiewicz-Szczypiorski.
During the first season, the archaeologists will focus on surveying sites for future excavations. They will perform geophysical surveys and take aerial photos of the Roman fort in Gonio (south of Batumi). Archaeologists - divers will also go to Georgia to conduct underwater reconnaissance in the vicinity of the Roman city and fort near Kobuleti.
"We may be able to verify several other archaeological sites, including the rich burial ground" - added the archaeologist.
The choice of sites and the research area was determined by their association with the presence of Roman garrisons. As in the Crimea, Romans placed garrisons on the coast, and the interior of the country remained outside their control. The team, which goes to Georgia has had several years of searching for Roman forts in the Crimea.
The Georgian research partner is Prof. Vakhtang Licheli from Tbilisi State University.
Regular excavations will commence next year.
