The ranking of the world’s best universities in the world, Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), commonly known as the Shanghai ranking, has been published for the 10th time. It is compiled by the Shanghai Jiaotong University.

Apart from Harvard University, which won the title of the world’s best university for the 10th time, two other U.S. universities were in the top three: Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Best among the European universities were two British colleges: Cambridge (5th place) and Oxford (10th place).

The University of Warsaw and the Jagiellonian University were in the range of between 301st and 400th place. The ranking does not report exact positions in these areas. Both universities remain in this range places almost since the beginning of the ranking. Only in 2003 the Jagiellonian University ranked lower, in the 5th hundred.

In addition to the general list of the best universities in the world, the ranking of 200 universities best in teaching of particular subjects (ARWU-SUBJECT) has been published. In teaching physics, the University of Warsaw has won a place in the second half of the second hundred (in the range between 151 and 200).

The Shanghai ranking is compiled based on several indicators. It takes into account the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, , the number of highly-cited researchers, the number of articles published in the journals Nature and Science, the number of publications listed in selected citation indexes (Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index). The comparison takes into account the level of achievements in relation to the size of the university. The ranking evaluates more than 1,000 universities, 500 of which make it to the list.
