Polish researchers develop digital tool for measuring gender equality in science

A digital tool for measuring gender equality in science has been developed by experts from the National Information Processing Institute - National Research Institute. Among other things, it offers insight into data about women employed in the science sector in Poland and Europe.
The tool was created as part of the GENDERACTION project.
The data from the project show that Polish science needs intensification of activities for gender equality. In terms of women's participation in professorship, the situation in Poland is similar to other EU-27 countries (Poland - 25 percent, EU - 27-26 percent). However, according to the National Information Processing Institute, the participation of women in decision-making bodies is slightly lower than the EU-27 average (Poland - 25 percent, EU - 27-31 percent). The biggest difference can be seen in the number of doctoral candidates in ICT (information and communication technology) sciences (Poland - 10 percent, EU - 27-23 percent).
National Information Processing Institute director Dr. Jarosław Protasiewicz said: “In the GENDERACTION project, in which researchers from the National Information Processing Institute participated, we managed to combine the social aspect, i.e. analysing scientific policy in the area of gender equality, with the technical aspect, i.e. building tools that support decision making in this area.
“Both our IT specialists and data analysis experts worked on the project. The result is an IT tool that measures gender equality. Anyone can use the National Information Processing Institute dashboard and check the participation of women and men at various levels of science, which I encourage.”
The tool make it possible to check the participation of women and men among students and graduates of studies in various fields in Poland and other European countries. It also provides data on women employed in the science sector.
The GENDERACTION project consortium has as many as 13 members and five associate partners. It was coordinated by the Institute of Sociology of the Czech Academy of Sciences. The project budget was nearly 2 million euros. It was financed from the Horizon 2020 framework programme. The project will continue. On June 1, GENDERACTIONPlus was inaugurated as part of the Horizon Europe framework programme. The National Information Processing Institute also participates in the project.
